Dogs are more than just cuddly companions though some might still want to know why dogs are the best pets – research continues to show that pets provide real health benefits to their owners. Having a dog can reduce stress levels for both adults and children. They have been found to reduce the risk of asthma in children and are associated with lowering blood pressure.
Why Dogs Are The Best Pets
The researchers also showed that dog owners are more active than those without dogs, taking more steps a day for walks or simply during normal play. Last month, a study found that older dog owners averaged 2,760 more steps per day than non-owners, which equates to an additional 23 minutes of moderate exercise per day.
A new study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health shows how persistent this phenomenon is: Dog owners are also significantly more active in winter.
Researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the University of Cambridge Center for Diet and Activity Research used data from the Norfolk European Prospective Cancer and Nutrition Study cohort and focused their study on 3123 participants aged 49 to 91. Nearly 20% of the participants had a dog and they all wore an accelerometer for seven days to track their movements.

The researchers found that people who did not have a dog were sedentary, on average, about 30 minutes more per day than those who walked their dogs.
Everyone in the study was less active on shorter days, colder days, and days with more rainfall. But the researchers found that even on days with bad weather, dog breeders were more active than those who did not walk their dogs on the most pleasant days.
“We were surprised to find that breeders, on average, were more physically active and spent less time sitting on the coldest, wettest and darkest days than dog owners on the long, sunny and warm summer days,” project manager Andy Jones. , says a press release, UEA professor.
For example, breeders on the wettest days exercised on average 12 minutes longer than those without dogs on the driest days. Overall, on the driest days, dog breeders were sedentary for an average of 632 minutes, compared to 661 minutes for non-dog owners. Here are all you need to know about a bulldog.
Jones said this finding could be important in motivating people to stay active as they age.
Almost a third of older people move a little and someone would still want to ask why dogs are the best pets.
“Physical activity interventions usually try to keep people active by focusing on self-benefits, but dog walking is also determined by the needs of the animal,” Jones said in a press release. “Movement beyond our own needs can be a really powerful motivator, and we need to find ways to leverage it in designing exercise interventions in the future.”
