Mercedes-AMG launches electric turbocharger production
AMG brings Formula 1 technology onto the road. This could potentially be a game changer.
For several years now, Formula 1 engines have used electric turbochargers with an electric motor attached to a shaft that connects the compressor and turbine wheels. The result is virtually no turbo lag, as the electric motor spins the compressor and turbine much faster than the exhaust gas alone. Excellent material and thanks to Mercedes-AMG it goes into series production of road cars.
AMG announced today that it will use an electric turbocharger co-developed with Garrett in a future production model. A Mercedes spokesman told our team that the turbo will be used in a variant of the 2.0-liter AMG M139 engine currently used in the new 45-series vehicles as part of the latest car technologies.
Mercedes has yet to announce which model this turbo will debut, but it’s worth noting that last year there were reports that AMG might ditch the V-8 for the next C63 and adopt some sort of four-cylinder instead. This electrically turbocharged M139 definitely sounds like it could be.
This new electric turbocharger is mesmerizing. The idea is to combine the fast response of the smaller turbocharger with the performance of the larger turbocharger.
As with the F1 MGU-H, the electric motor is mounted directly on the shaft that connects the turbine and compressor wheels. The engine is powered by a 48-volt electrical system and begins to spin the compressor impeller before the exhaust gas spins the turbine.
Mercedes-AMG boldly announces the results. “Turbo lag – the response delay of a conventional turbocharger – is eliminated by an electric motor,” the brand said in a statement.
A 1.6-inch electric motor keeps the compressor wheel spinning even when the driver presses the accelerator pedal, so there is no need to wait at power up.
Mercedes says the electric motor also helps improve torque at low revs, and it will eventually be able to harvest energy on its own, like the MGU-H.
The M139 offers a maximum power output of 414 hp. and 369 lb-ft of torque, and it’s unclear how those numbers will change with the addition of a new electric turbocharger.
Mercedes told Road & Track that “the use of an electrified turbo is not aimed at achieving the highest possible peak power; rather, this technology increases efficiency, response characteristics and the useful speed range of charged motors. ” It’s also worth noting that it differs from the electric auxiliary compressor that AMG uses in the 53 series.
This unit is a separate compressor driven by an electric motor that supplies air directly to the engine or to the turbocharger. It achieves similar goals – reducing turbo lag and improving low-end torque – but it’s a separate device from the turbocharger.
Mercedes will use a similar electric turbocharger in its ONE hypercar, which borrows the engine from the 2017 F1 car. But this is perhaps more important. Modern F1 technologies are coming to mass production cars.

The S-Pod is outfitted with smart safety features, too, like automatic braking on turns and exterior lights that double as turn signals.
Electric vehicle maker Fisker is using its luxury SUV, the Ocean, to show the competition how to make eco-friendly vehicles. Fisker claims the Ocean is the world’s “most sustainable vehicle,” supposedly due to its all-electric drivetrain, vegan leather interior, and use of recycled materials like nylon and polyester.
The Ocean also features a slick solar panel roof for passive battery charging, as well as a cool “California Mode” that rolls down every window for an open-air feeling without compromising safety.
Canoo naked skateboard chassis looks like a fun kart
On Thursday, California-based company Canoo released a video showing its naked skateboard platform propelled like a giant kart. Startup EV also posted more details on its platform and powertrain in an accompanying press release.
The skateboard platform can be moved without additional equipment as it contains all the mechanical components of the vehicle, including the engines, battery, steering and suspension.
This helps free up space for passengers and makes it easier to launch the various Canoo models by simply placing the new body on the skateboard.
Kanu said the platform can be fitted with front, rear or twin-engine powertrains, with all components developed in-house. The twin-engine powertrain can produce over 500 horsepower with a range of over 300 miles, Kanu said.

Acura has revived its Type S performance designation with the introduction of the updated 2021 TLX this year, whose own Type S variant features a newly developed 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine producing 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.
The good news is that new Type S variants are on the way. In fact, all future Acura will have a performance option, brand head John Ikeda told Motor Trend in an interview published last week.
“The capital we want to invest in Type S is huge,” he said. “Yes, we want to use Type S in everything.”
The identities of the next two variants of the Type S were revealed in June, when a video from a dealer meeting was posted on an enthusiast forum.
