In 1999, the Golden Retriever was the AKC’s second most popular breed. This ranking is not surprising because a dog has many qualities that make it an ideal pet. However, the roots of the golden retriever are found in the fields and waters of the UK.

The Golden Retriever was bred as a bird dog, especially for hunting waterfowl, and the breed emerged from a number of other breeds that are thought to have included spaniels, setters, and Newfoundlands (but not the Newfoundland as we know today), and, perhaps even a bloodhound.

This combination created a resilient, strong floating dog that could withstand cold water, track down injured game, and fight crippled birds.

Today, golden retrievers are not only good avian dogs and pets; They are also popular as service dogs for the blind and disabled, as well as search and rescue dogs and smuggling detection dogs. Few dogs can claim the versatility of this breed.
