A teenage mom accused of the manslaughter of her 20-month-old daughter left her alone in her apartment for six days, the court said today.
18-year-old Verphy Kudi was indicted after her daughter Asia died in her apartment in Brighton, East Sussex, last December.
In the indictment, Jeremy King stated that the surveillance camera showed her leaving her apartment in Islingward Road, Brighton on December 5, 2019 – her 18th birthday – and did not return until December 11. He said Asia died while she was away.
The infant was taken to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, but was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.
An autopsy and subsequent additional forensic studies showed that infant Asia died of neglect.
Kudi appeared via video link, wrapped in a gray blanket and crying as the charges were announced.
The CPS-sanctioned indictment follows an investigation by detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Serious Crimes Team.
No plea has been received today and she was remanded in custody until November 16, when she appears at Lewis Royal Court.
No petition was filed for bail and presidency, and she was remanded in custody because of the nature and seriousness of the crime.

The court heard that the autopsy showed that the child had died of negligence.
Verphy Kudi, who has no permanent address, appeared via video link at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.
Verphy Kudi spoke only to confirm her name and understood the charge against her.
Verphy Kudi was sent to the Royal Court of Brighton the following month.
