“Cheer” star Jerry Harris was warned before the child porn arrest of the gym owner posted on “AGT,” a lawsuit

Federal prosecutors said that four months before his arrest for child sexual exploitation, cheerleader Jerry Harris dropped his cell phone after a friend told him he might be under investigation. Authorities did not name the person who alerted Harris, saying only that it was the person who owned the gym.

The amended lawsuit, filed Monday, alleges that the unnamed girlfriend is Angela Rogers, co-owner of Cheer Athletics, a well-known support company whose Wildcats featured on NBC’s America’s Got Talent this year.

TODAY shows that Rogers was one of the few people who knew about the boys’ allegations in May – this month, prosecutors said, Harris received a warning from a friend. The boys’ mother, Kristen, said she spoke to Rogers about the allegations because Harris was an athlete in Cheer Athletics.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Rogers said, “Cheer Athletics and Angela Rogers strongly deny the charges against them. The modified petition is inaccurate and misleading. ”

Rogers denied several specific allegations in the lawsuit, including that she tried to help cover up or destroy evidence. She did not directly deny that it was she who told Harris. When USA TODAY pressured Rogers about this, she reiterated her previous statement, largely denying the charges against her.

Within days of learning of the allegations, Rogers reported the allegations to several law enforcement agencies and the United States All-Star Federation (USASF), which regulates competitive cheerleading, according to interviews and records obtained by USA TODAY. Rogers previously said that Harris has not been associated with the Cheer Athletics since March 1.

Harris, 21, is being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago while his criminal case is pending. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Harris rose to fame when he starred in the Netflix documentary series “Cheer.” Prosecutors say Harris confessed last month to extorting nude photos or sex between five and ten children, having sex with a 15-year-old boy in the bathroom at a support competition, and paying minors over $ 1,000 for candid photos.

Harris’s lawyer, Todd Pugh, did not respond to a request for comment.

US Assistant Attorney Christopher Parente, in a court motion filed last week in relation to Harris’s imprisonment, said a friend had contacted Harris about a potential investigation. Parente did not give the court the name of the friend, or explain why the man “told” Harris.

He said Harris told authorities that he got rid of his cell phone because he knew there was evidence of his crimes in it. The prosecutor said that even after the warning in May, Harris bought a new phone and continued to hunt children.

Rogers and the Cheer Athletics continued to publicly support Harris for several months after Rogers learned that Harris was being accused of sexual harassment.

Two weeks after she became aware of the allegations, Rogers responded to Harris’ tweet urging people to vote in the presidential election. “I love this and you!” Rogers tweeted on May 30.
“I love you so much, Coach Angela!” Harris replied.

In July, when “Cheer” was nominated for six Emmy awards, Cheer Athletics posted a photo of a radiant Harris on her Instagram account with the caption: “In our spirits after hearing that our friends at @navarro_college_cheer received 6 EMMY nominations this morning.”

Harris admitted to “soliciting and receiving child pornography on Snapchat” from “people he knew were minors,” according to the September criminal case.
